"The photographs of Al Sol convey the universality of cultures as expressed through the rituals of daily life. Stella Johnson's dynamic compositions erupt with fragmented bodies and dense patterns. Shadows complicate the picture space, adding or altering shapes, and beams of light irradiate figures. The connection Johnson makes with the communities she photographs is not simply about documenting a culture or a story, but extending the meaning of family and maintaining relationships with people from seemingly faraway places, who, in turn, become part of her family back in Boston."
